A Meow, Synths and Skittering Hats: thecatrave - look
Updated: 5 days ago
"look" opens with a tiny cat meow that's easy to miss and a nice touch. After that it gets down to business. The drums are built from shuffly, chopped-up break samples layered over a syncopated kick that keeps coming back, with fast hats that tick along on top and a sharp, high slap of a clap that cuts through the whole way. The track keeps pushing forward and never really settles, and it sounds busy and a little nervy.
Over the drums sits a angelic synthy vocal line with a late-80s, early-rave feel. It's warm and a bit sad, and it reminds me of old Bleep-era UK records. The bass is a deep sub with a higher layer on top, menacing underneath at times, and a lead synth mirrors it. Around the halfway point a second, ravey lead joins in and gives the middle a lift without changing the character of the track.
The vocal is chopped, stuttered and gated hard, but it keeps a melody underneath, so the hooks work as both rhythm and tune. The processing is the highlight for me. The response phrases are panned left, which makes the mix feel a little lopsided on headphones, and I like that. Little phrases appear panned right. The panning works the whole way through.
The mix is beautiful, and you can tell he knows what he's doing. There's a layer of white noise or hiss under the hats that takes up a lot of room in a few spots, but it never sits there for long, and it drifts around the stereo field instead of crowding the middle. A low rumble, like a storm approaching or distant thunder, rolls in around the second half and comes back near the end, just before everything falls away to the core elements. After three minutes of momentum, the breakdown is a real relief.
If there's a caveat, it's that the main pattern holds steady for most of the 3:18, so the track asks you to settle in rather than wait for a big change. I think that's the point. The hats stay frenetic enough to dance to the whole way through, and the loop pulls you in. The thunder rumble returns at the end, and the stripped-back ending feels like the payoff for sticking with it. It suits late-night headphone sessions, and I'd expect it to work as a quick transition in a club set.
